Newer ground between the highway and the lake

Harker Heights is the youngest of the five communities on this site, and it reads that way on the ground. The city sits along the Central Texas Expressway between Killeen and Belton, on rolling terrain that climbs away from the highway toward Stillhouse Hollow Lake, and most of what is built here was built comparatively recently.

That topography is worth paying attention to. Unlike the flatter parts of the county, Harker Heights has genuine elevation change, which produces hillside lots, long views from some streets, and drainage that behaves differently from one block to the next.

The city has become the retail center for this side of the county, with the Market Heights development and the commercial corridor along the highway handling a lot of the shopping for the surrounding area.

Housing in Harker Heights

Most of the housing stock is suburban subdivision construction, with a good deal of it from the last three decades. Compared with Temple or Belton there is much less pre-war housing and far fewer historic streets; compared with Killeen there is generally a different lot layout and a different feel to the neighborhoods.

Areas that come up regularly include Skipcha Mountain Estates, Tuscany Meadows, Country Trails and The Ridge. They vary in age, lot size, whether there is an HOA and how much the terrain shaped the layout, so it is worth walking a street before deciding a subdivision is or is not for you.

Because so much of the stock is relatively new, buyers here often compare a resale against building new. Both are live options in this market, and they involve genuinely different contracts and different risks. I am happy to walk through the comparison.

Getting around

The Central Texas Expressway, US 190, runs the length of the city and is the spine of everything here. It connects west into Killeen and east toward Nolanville and Belton, where it meets Interstate 35. FM 2410 and FM 3481 carry a lot of local traffic, and FM 1670 heads toward the lake.

The practical point for a buyer is that Harker Heights is well positioned for people whose work is spread between Killeen and the I-35 corridor, which is a common situation in this county.

Parks, recreation and everyday life

Stillhouse Hollow Lake is the defining outdoor feature, with Dana Peak Park offering shoreline access, trails and camping on a peninsula into the lake. In town, Carl Levin Park and the Harker Heights Community Park cover playgrounds, sports fields, walking loops and the community events calendar.

Day to day, the retail corridor means you can do most of your errands without leaving the city, which is less true of some of its neighbors. Restaurants are concentrated along the highway rather than in a historic downtown, because there is not one.

Schools

Most of Harker Heights is served by Killeen Independent School District, which covers several cities in this part of the county. Some addresses on the eastern side fall into Belton Independent School District, so this is a place where checking the specific address genuinely matters.

School attendance boundaries are set by the district and can change, so always confirm the assigned campuses for a specific address directly with the district before you rely on them. For campus-level information and accountability reports, the Texas Education Agency is the official source. I do not rate schools or tell buyers which ones to choose.

Worth looking at before you buy in Harker Heights

• Slope and drainage. On hillside lots, find out where water goes in a downpour, how the retaining walls are holding up and whether the driveway grade suits your vehicles.
• Which district the address is in. The city is served by more than one school district. Confirm with the district rather than assuming.
• HOA documents. Many of the newer subdivisions have an association with real restrictions on outbuildings, fencing, parking and rentals. Read them during the option period.
• Resale versus new build. If you are weighing both, compare the total picture: lot, timeline, what is included, warranty and how each contract protects you.
• Insurance and roof age. Get a quote early, particularly on homes with original roofing.
